NHL Marketing Changing Team's Colours. Chaos to follow for sports commentators.

A new proto-type graphic for next year's NHL;

Like it? GARY BETTMAN thinks you will!

So, you know that saying 'Don't Mess With A Good Thing'? Apparently neither does the NHL marketing department, led by GARY BETTMAN. Next year could see the classic red uniforms of the Detroit Red Wings and the orange of the Philadelphia Flyers 'swapped' for divisional rivals St. Louis Blues and Boston Bruins, respectively. I don't get those rivalries, but I don't get anything about the NHL these days... Pictures after the break.

Unfortunately, in what can be considered an...interesting...attempt at getting new fans and continuing to confuse and alienate their old ones, the NHL has been toying with the idea of swapping rival team colours for special cross-divisional marketing tie-ins.

Claiming that changing team colours will only generate fan interest (and merchandise sales), the NHL referred back to the mid-90's when the concept of the 3rd or 'matin-gay' jersey became all the rage.

This was only Linden's 4th worst thing to happen
to him as a Canuck.
Keeping with the idea that true fans will throw money at anything in a desperate bid to maintain relevance (see; Toronto Maple Leafs), the NHL decided that the chance to cash in on these future thrift store finds may be too good to pass up.

Edmonton fans were not amused with the potential decision, particularly as they (and all other Canadian teams except for Vancouver) were passed over in implementing a team-colour swap with their hated rivals, the Calgary Flames over who gets to pick first in the next year's draft.

Regardless of the omission of Canadian teams, the NHL believes the idea is sound for American audiences, as most still have no idea of any team that does not wear pinstripes and would just be buying the jerseys for performers to wear in the background of rap videos.  Canadian fans are already threatening to walk away from the NHL of this obvious and confusing cash grab, saying this time GARY BETTMAN has gone too far. Just like they did the time before. And before then. And before then.
